About National Standardization Agency of Indonesia |
In line with national capability development in the field of standardization and in anticipating World trade globalization era, AFTA (2003) and APEC (2010/2020), standardization activities that include an integrated standard and conformity assessment needs to have a sustainable development. It is important especially in confirming and enhancing national products competitiveness, improving trade flow as well as protecting public interests. It is the responsibility of National Standardization Agency (BSN) to provide guidance, to develop as well as to coordinate national scope activities focusing on standardization.
National Standardization Body was established with reference to Presidential Decree No. 13 of 1997 which was later amended by Presidential Decree No. 166 of 2000 regarding Position, Duties, Function, Authorities, Organization Chart as well as Working Conditions of Non-departmental Government Institution as have been modified several times and the last one by Presidential Decree No. 103 Year 2001, as a non-departmental government institution with main responsibility to develop and conduct standardization activities in Indonesia. This agency was established to replace the function of National Standardization Council – DSN. In performing its tasks, the National Standardization Agency refers to the Government Regulation No. 102 of 2000 regarding National Standardization.
The implementation of National Standardization Institution in the field of accreditation is conducted by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN). The duties of KAN are to set up accreditation and to give consideration and suggestions to BSN in setting up accreditation and certification systems. The execution of tasks and functions of BSN in the field of National Standard for unit measurement is performed by National Standard Committee for Unit Measurement (KSNSU). KSNSU has the task of providing consideration and suggestion to BSN regarding national standard for measurement unit.
The main objective of standardization is to protect producers, consumers, labors as well as the public in relation with security, safety, health and environment conservation. The implementation of standardization within national scope is carried out to build a national system that will be able to support, increase, to guarantee product’s quality and/or services as well as to facilitate national products acceptance in global market transactions. It is therefore expected that the system will be able to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian products and/or services in the global market. |

- Develop policies and legislation of standardization and conformity assessment

BSN Functions
a. assessment and preparation of national policy in the field of national standardization;
b. coordination of functional activities in executing the tasks of BSN;
c. facilitaties and guidance in government activities related to national standardization;
d. organization of collaboration activities in the field of standardization within national and international scope;
e. Guidance and general administration services in the field of general planning, administration, organization and implementation, human resources, finance, filing, legal procedures, encoding, supplies and household

BSN AUTHORISATIONS
In performing its tasks BSN has the following authorisations:
a. a macro national planning in the concerned fields;
b. formulation of policy in the concerned fields in order to support development in macro scale;
c. setting up information system in the related field;
d. other authorities in accordance with the existing rules and regulations such as:
1) Formulation and implementation of certain policy in the field of standardization;
2) Formulating and setting up the policy on accreditation system of certification, inspection bodies and laboratories;
3) Setting up Indonesian National Standard;
4) Organization of research and development;
5) Organization of education and training in the relevant fields.
