BSN has now made cooperation with 18 Universities in Indonesia (USU, UNSRI, ITB, IPB, UI, UNAS, USAKTI, UNS, UNDIP, UGM, UII, UNY, UNIBRAW, ITS, UBAYA, UNLAM, UNHAS, UNUD). The cooperation in education about standardization is opportunity, potential and challenge to BSN and universities. How to make the cooperation not just in a piece of paper, how to realize and follow up the same? The most important is how to make the cooperation not "in vain" and voiceless. Therefore, forum on education about standardization was held to evaluate the implementation of the cooperation and discuss the follow-up thereof.
The forum held on November 19, 2009 at Balai Kartini, Jakarta was followed by 40 participants being the representatives of the universities already signing MoU and those not yet signing MoU (observers; Unika Soegijapranata, University of Bung Karno, University of Suryadharma, Public University of Medan, University of Nusa Bangsa Bogor). The forum was also held to enliven the National Quality Month. In her opening remark, Dewi Odjar, Deputy Head of Standardization Information and Socialization extended that BSN pioneered the cooperation with UNDIP (2005) in public education, research, and dedication in the field of standardization (managed by Research and Development Centre of BSN). In 2007, a team consisting of BSN and UNDIP was formed to prepare an introductory subject curriculum of standardization, and on September 4, 2007 the curriculum (the first edition) was launched at UNDIP.
In 2008, the curriculum was tried at Faculty of Industrial Engineering of UNDIP (sixth semester students), the result was evaluated. In the same year, a Review Team consisting of BSN, UNDIP, IPB, and USAKTI was formed. The curriculum was improved to the second edition curriculum. In 2009, the team developed the curriculum to textbook of introduction to standardization. The book was launched in a forum on education about standardization. It is a pride. The forum was also filled with explanation of Principles and Benefits of Application of ISO 9001 to Universities by Dr. Sunarya, Deputy Head of Accreditation Application and System.
He also extended that ISO 9001 generic standard can be applied in all fields of management, including in universities. One of the principles of ISO 9001 is to focus on customers, universities must identify customers and their needs, university customers are students and those receiving services, more than that, universities must also identify customers of the customers, namely industrial world, university graduates must fulfil industrial world demands, link and match. Comprehension of standard has now become industrial world demand. In this globalization era, standard becomes the second "language" after money. Therefore, education about standardization is required. Those also present to the forum were the representative of Catholic University of Soegijapranata represented by Prof. LMF. Purwanto and Hermawan, the Recipient of SNI Award 2009 for the category of Medium Service Industry to extend his success story in SNI Award event. Unika acknowledges that the application of ISO 9001 benefits.
According to Prof. LMF Purwanto, the application of ISO 9001 makes Unika more structured, consistent, measured, easy to make change, find systematic processes of tracing and solving problems, improves the public trust, and facilitates the fulfilment of National Standard of Education. The application of ISO 9001 in Universities can also answer the current demand, namely the quality education. The Head of BSN, Dr. Bambang Setiadi, was also present to the forum and extended that Indonesia needs experts particularly from universities to answer climate change issue. As we know that BSN is preparing GHG (Green House Gases) standard requiring experts in Carbon Emission count. It is a challenge to universities. Indonesia is accused of being the 3rd world GHG emitter after USA and China by World Bank, DFID, PEACE 2007.
Whereas, according to Dr. Retno Gumilang Dewi, Chemical Engineering Lecturer of ITB (in GHG seminar in Jakarta, 11/19) Indonesia is not the 3rd world GHG emitter if peat moss land fire emission is not counted in LULUCF (Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry) but the 6th world GHG emitter after US, China, Brazil, Russia and India). The Forum resolves that universities signing MoU agree to include standardization or standardization content in a subject, for example UNY will include the same in introduction to Real Work Lecture (KKN), BSN curriculum and textbook will serve as the main references. Universities will also contribute to expertises, researches, socializations and exchange of information in the field of standardization. BSN will develop laboratories of several universities.
The Forum also agrees to determine PIC (Person in Charge) of the respective Universities. The PIC can expectedly serve as "militant cadres". The Forum proves that BSN is serious about educating standardization, and it is nothing impossible that there will be standardization field or study program in Indonesia, the young generation of Indonesia is "aware of" standard, because we are convinced that standard and standardization are important but education about standard and standardization is more important from elementary school to university. That's what we fight for. (hary)
